 Canadian Football League
Gilchrist was a CFL All-Star five straight years, with the Hamilton Tiger Cats in 1956 and 1957, in 1958 with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and with the Toronto Argonauts in 1959 and 1960.
Buffalo Bills in 1962, when he was the first American Football League player to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, (1,096 in a 14-game schedule), earning him league MVP honors.
Because of their influence on the league that was to become the genesis of modern professional football in the United States, some of those players are acknowledged here.

 Canada's best coach to take in holiday game
After spending one season as head coach of the Orlando Thunder in the World League of American Football, Matthews returned to the CFL in 1991 to rebuild the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Amesbury native Don Matthews -- who left school during his senior year to serve a three-year hitch with the Marines before returning to graduate from Amesbury High in 1960 -- is the guest of honor tomorrow night at an open house at The Polish Club from 7 to 10.
Matthews grew up on Friend Street and was nicknamed "Puppy" during his high school playing days under legendary AHS coach Tony Tassinari.

According to the CFL, the original Alouettes, the Concordes and the "new" Alouettes are considered the same franchise, despite the name change and a nine-year absence of a team in Montreal from 1987 until 1995.
The original Alouettes folded after the 1981 season, but were brought back the following year as the Concordes, who played from 1982 until 1985.
There are some mini helmets depicting an Alouettes design similar to the 1960-69 "wing" version but with a green wing instead of red.

 Abner Haynes, Sr.
By the end of the 1964 football season, Abner was the AFL’s all time touchdown leader with 53 touchdowns and the League’s third leading career ground gainer.
Haynes has represented professional athletes in negotiations with the NFL, CFL and the WFL.
Following college he became the new American Football League& first Rookie of the Year and Player of the year in 1960, playing with the Dallas Texans (later the Kansas City Chiefs).
