The 1960 Indianapolis 500 was ignored by the Europeans as usual and was in many respects a repeat of the battle of the previous year between Jim Rathmann, Rodger Ward and Johnny Thompson with Pat Flaherty's role being taken over by Eddie Sachs.
This was the final Indianapolis 500 to count for the World Championship.
The four cars disputed the lead for much of the event and once again it was left to Ward and Rathmann going head-to-head in the final stages.

Jim Clark at the Indianapolis 500
For decades the preserve of front-engined roadsters (in essence, oversized dirt-track cars), the Indianapolis 500 had at times during the 1950s been included as a round of the World Championship but none of the European teams had thought the race worth contesting with the cars they were using.
The Indianapolis 500 is surely the world's most glamorous motor race.
Clark's introduction to the Indy 500, a race normally noted for a friendly, North American attitude, was galling.

In October 1960, Ward got a chance to drive Brabham's rear-engine Formula One Cooper-Climax during a feasibility test at the Speedway, which paved the way for Brabham to compete in the 1961 Indianapolis 500 in a rear-engine car.
