Rugby League grew very quickly indeed, and although the game was only a popular spectator sport, mainly played by Australians and New Zealanders, it was clear that Rugby League was their national sport by the 1960's.
The next five to ten years saw Rugby League grow very rapidly as it became not only a popular spectator sport, but became popular to play with the public in Papua New Guinea, and in 1974, the PNGRFL were admitted to the 'International Federation'.
Their next World Cup in 1988-92 was without a doubt, a disastrous World Cup, losing all of their games and finishing last in the table.

However, though not called Rugby at the time, games involving ‘carrying the ball’ were first recorded as early as 1175 by a monk named William Fitzstephen, who chronicled the games in ‘The History of London.’ These matches were brutal and had very few rules or regulations, leading authorities to ban them.
Before I move onto the discussion of Rugby in an international context, particularly looking at its involvement within the US sporting arena, I feel it is important that I briefly explain the split of Rugby into Rugby Union and Rugby League, two similar games, but defined by their own set of distinctive rules.
The world cups of 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999 and 2003 have been won by New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Australia again and England, respectively, with the last world cup being contested by 20 countries, and many more participating in the qualifying rounds.

The World Cup was held in England for the first time in 1960 and, fittingly, Great Britain won back the crown, only for Australia to regain possession eight years later when they beat France in the final in Sydney.

The Stanley behind the Stanley Cup was Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada (the Queen's Representative to the Dominion of Canada), the sixth in the long regal line.
The Cup went to a Ranger victory party at a Manhattan saloon called the Auction House, where it stopped traffic, started parades, and was drunk out of by everyone in sight until the bar was effectively down to backwash (but that probably wouldn't have stopped them).
The Cup was reputedly used as a peanut dish (by whom, when and where, I don't know--though it might have been done on numerous occasions).
