  Encyclopedia: 1960 in science
For example, one major problem of science programs before the development of frameworks was that in 1st grade a child learned about plants, and in 3rd grade received the same lessons, and in 4th and 5th grade the child learned the same concepts about plants again.
The science sub-committees were to justify the inclusion of natural sciences in the schools, which they did by citing the disciplinary value and the potential for the development of the intellect.
Having examined science education and technology through the course of the century, it is appropriate to place the use of technology in science teaching into a broader context and to consider other avenues for research into what the use of technology could bring to science education.

 INFORMATION SCIENCE: THE INVISIBLE SUBSTRATE
The domain of information science is the universe of recorded information that is selected and retained for later access; the domain of education is curricula; and the domain of journalism is the journalistic product of all the newsworthy areas of life (science reporting, political reporting, etc.).
The natural sciences study the natural world, the social sciences study the social worlds produced by humans, and the arts and humanities study the content and context of the creative works of human beings, from philosophy to literature to the arts.
In mid-twentieth century social science we have had a series of waves of methodological fashion--each wave declaring the prior approach to be hopelessly bankrupt and inadequate.

Science, Technology and Nonviolent Action, by Brian Martin
By examining what science and technology is likely to be useful for nonviolent action, a set of priorities for disciplinary fields, research projects and methods of research is obtained that is quite different from ones associated with military priorities.
It is worth noting that to refer to 'basic' science is to prejudge the assessment, since 'basic' science is normally assumed to exclude those areas of science which are close to applications and in which the influence of groups such as the military is obvious and direct.
The usual approach to the social shaping of science and technology is to observe the apparent connection between the existence of a social interest and developments in science or technology that seem to respond to or serve that social interest.

The Anti-Science Movement of the 1970's
The final, and most serious criticism of science and technology is that the scientific world-view robs the world of mystery and beauty, explains away phenomena, and trivializes what it touches.
A good deal of the antipathy between science and religion is the result of scientists, like Francis Crick and Jacques Monod, misusing science as a prop for their own personal philosophies.
The most obvious flaw in the statement is the implication that science has somehow undermined the concept of an afterlife, or of prolonging an individual's life beyond the grave, concepts that are simply inaccessible to science.

The Dietetics course at the University of Melbourne was moved into the Faculty of Applied Science when it was founded in 1960, and disappeared from the university altogether when this Faculty was abolished in 1969.
The university course was not popular however, mostly because it was possible to become a dietitian in Victoria simply by completing a 2 year course at the Emily Mac (and later the Gordon Institute in Geelong).
Audrey Cahn contended that Trikojus was forced to set up the nutrition course because the University of Melbourne had received a grant to do so, but that it was always regarded simply as 'cookery', and Trikojus did all he could to try to get rid of it.

The number of women entering studies in science and engineering increased from 1960 to 1990.
Their interest in these traditionally masculine courses were reflected in other fields, and those who subsequenlty took up advanced studies in science and engineering had begun to reach the parity that had been desired by educators seeking equality in all fields.
However, women who have graduated from these courses were not given much encouragement by their superiors and peers were likely to be dismayed by the existing male-dominated circles which prevented their active participation.
