As usual in safety films, the everyday world is a minefield of potential risks, menaces, and jeopardy, but "Guardiana, the Safety Woman" and her supernatural powers are here to protect children from harm.
Sid Davis's most compassionate film and certainly his most unusual, AGE 13 enlists Buñuelian surrealism and a neorealist sensibility as it follows the emergence of an "at-risk" young teen from immobilizing anger to self-expression.
Borrowing from film noir and late1950s TV drama, it might be read as a case study of a rural man trapped by his discontent with urban life.

Hollywood and Society; enclyclo art [encl] - Title
Whereas some films from the silent and early sound era presented poverty and social struggle from progressive perspectives sympathetic to the poor and oppressed, many films focused on the rich and celebrated wealth and power, serving as advertisements for the consumer society and the ruling elites.
Western films, for example, assured its audiences that "civilization" could be maintained in the face of threats from criminals, outsiders, and villains of various sorts, and celebrated individualism, white male authority figures, and violence as a legitimate way of resolving conflicts.
Thus, analyzing the connection between film and society requires a multidimensional film criticism that situates its object within the context of the social milieu within which it is produced and received.

Greatest Film Scenes Tribute - 1960s
The iconographic "buddy" film is both memorialized as an image of the popular and historical culture of the time and a story of a contemporary journey eastward through the American Southwest by two self-righteous, anti-hero, free-wheeling, long-haired, social misfits / dropouts / hippies.
To increase the tension of the scene, the film is sharply edited, inter-cutting rapidly from the Bunch in the bank, to the bounty hunters, to the temperance marchers.
In the blood ballet (partially filmed in poetic slow motion), many of the bullets strike innocent bystanders in the crowd - men, women, and children in the parade are caught in the crossfire.

1960s Special Feature: Film Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
"Berkeley in the 1960s," a retrospective documentary directed by Mark Kitchell in 1992, uses historical footage and in-depth interviews with former students to carefully examine the evolution of student activism on the Berkeley campus from 1960 to 1969.
The Berkeley campus was the breeding grounds for all the central movements in the 1960s beginning with the Free Speech movement in 1964 and eventually fostering the growth of the nonviolent civil rights movement, the fl power movement, the anti-war movement in the mid to late 1960s, and the women’s liberation movement.
The film makes the point that to the delight of the conservative forces attempting to undermine the student movements, the general public stereotyped all politically active students as irresponsible, sex-crazed drug users, only concerned with having fun and doing bizarre, unconventional things.

After passage of the law, film companies were required to own their own studios and equipment, have a minimum number of actors and directors under contract, and to produce a minimum of 15 films per year.
For audiences of the 1960s, the film highlights not only Korea's stark class divisions, but also the generation gap that was opening ever wider in that time period, with increasingly wild youth and ever more alarmed parents.

Kinoeye | Czech film: Karel Kachyna's post-1960s films
The golden epoch of Czech film in the 1960s was also the most creative period in Karel Kachyňa's work, which was, at that time, closely connected with the writer Jan Procházka.
In this film, Kachyňa uses poetic images to recreate the atmosphere of Žižkov in the middle of the 20th century.
Kachyňa's latest feature film Hanele was criticized for asserting the love story between the girl Hanele and two men: her friend from childhood Šlojme Kac and her "adult" love, a businessman Ivo Karadžič to the prejudice of repression of the historical context.

Bright Lights Film Journal | American Independent Narrative Cinema of the '60s
Foreign films, with their frank portrayals of sexuality, gained fresh currency; Italian neorealism, in particular, and then-cutting-edge directors like Godard, Bergman, and Fellini wielded a great influence on a new generation of filmmakers who were also filmgoers.
Many of the films from this period have a similar rough documentary feel, as if the actors were shown the contours of a scene, then asked to improvise.
Other films from this period use a "mock-documentary" style, with overdubbed narration and real locations — Allen Barron's late noir, Blast of Silence (1961), a recent rediscovery of a legendary film that's finally resurfaced on video, is a good example.

Film studies professors pride themselves about how their work "demystifies" and "denaturalizes" the ideologies (usually oppressive) that govern films, especially Hollywood films.
In contemporary film theory, the articulation of the rules of classical cinema (suturing, shot-reverse-shots, continuity editing, cause-and-effect narrative development, etc.) has become a genre of academic writing in itself, providing a reproducible teaching and research model.
This erasure, whereby the film itself is only but one of many options on DVD, embeds the film in language that, until recently, was the province of film professors, whose authority depended upon limited access to such materials.

Fisher tantalizingly hints at the coming horror when one of the two female travelers sits on her bed and remarks on its lumpiness (is the mattress made of bodies?), and Clove doesn’t waste much time bleeding one of the two men dry in order to resurrect Lee’s towering villain.
The free-form film falls apart, however, by resorting to overly extravagant bits like having an elephant (painted with ‘60s slogans about love and peace) receive a good scrubbing during a monumental bubble bath in the middle of the house’s swank living room.

Auteurism refers to a theory which believes that the film’s director is completely in control of the meaning of his or her (most often his) films, much as an author of a novel controls the meaning of that form of textuality.
Bergman films like this one were so well respected because they were able to combine this thematically meaningful mythological force with a visual poesis uncommon in the cinema.

Already struggling to define the difference between reality and fantasy by making a film about his own life, Paul is led even further astray by his fixation, risking his relationship with the earthy, passionate Marlene (Elodie Bouchez).
The third and fourth films are more abstract: one is a dissonant, somewhat morose 17-minute meditation on Dragonfly, while the other is almost self-consciously pretentious, taking on the idea of reconstructing the past and re-creating history.
Appropriately for a film in which style and visual impact are so important, the 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer is excellent (a full-screen version of the film is also available), and the 5.1 Dolby Digital sound is crisp and clear.

And it's not that aspect of the film that I object to - it's easy enough to see past the minimalist set design - it's the severely overlong running time (three hours!) and inexplicably odd behavior among characters that does the film in.
