Hill, who was born in Miami, Fla., and was raised in Santa Monica, Calif., became the first American to win a Formula 1 championship when he drove a Ferrari to the title in 1961.
He has the distinction of having won the first and last races of his driving career, the final victory being the BOAC 500 at Brands Hatch in England in 1967.
