 New Georgia Encyclopedia: Fran Tarkenton (b. 1940)
Tarkenton was chosen in the third round (twenty-ninth overall) of the 1961 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings.
In 1960, his senior season, Tarkenton was the captain of the Georgia squad, led the conference in total offense and in passing, and was named an All-American.
Tarkenton reached that 1,000-yard mark in 1977 despite breaking his leg in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals and missing the last five games of that season.

In an early attempt by the established NFL to disrupt the new league, Winter and the Minnesota group were lured away from the so-called "Foolish Club" and promised a franchise in the older league, which eventually became the Minnesota Vikings.
The AFL did not play an All-Star game after its first season in 1960 but did stage All-Star games for the 1961 through 1969 seasons.
The AFL benefited from having been formed just at a time when professional football was beginning to catch up with (and eventually, in the 1960s, overtake) baseball as the most popular spectator team sport in the United States.
