Army Aviation's response was to develop the "Aviation Restructure Initiative," a plan to decrease the size of the force while continuing to meet its mission and also overcoming existing deficiencies.

 History of Marine Corps Aviation
For Marine Aviation, this period between the Korean War and the major involvement of the U.S. in Vietnam in 1965 was characterized mainly by research and development.
It became operational in late 1960 and early 1961 and, by the end of 1965, 29 Navy and Marine squadrons were flying the Phantom II.
In late 1960 and early 1961, one of the most significant acquisitions for Marine Aviation began to come into the inventory, the Lockheed GV-1 Hercules transport, which was later given the unified designation of C-130.

Tallmantz Aviation, Inc., was formed in 1961 by pilots Frank G. Tallman (1919-1978) and Paul Mantz (1903-1965).
Aviation services provided to the motion picture industry included modern and antique aircraft, aerial photography, aerial stunts and crashes, location spotting, mockups, props, research, and charters.

The 1109th AVCRAD is authorized 15 battle streamers on it colors and the unit has received the Presidential Unit Citation, the Meritorious Citation and the Philippines Presidential Unit Citation.
The 162nd Transportation Battalion was reorganized into the 1109th Aviation Classification Repair Activity Depot (AVCRAD) in 1979 with a complement of 78 full-time employees.
Its day-to-day mission is to provide limited depot level maintenance and back-up aviation intermediate maintenance (AVIM) to Army National Guard aviation facilities in 14 northeastern states from Maine to Virginia to Ohio as well as the District of Columbia.
