The Pittsburgh team is one of 52 in the ABA, and will play in the "Connie Hawkins" division, named for the former ABA and NBA star who played for the ABL's Pittsburgh Rens in 1961-62 and Pittsburgh Pipers in 1967.
Pittsburgh's link to pro basketball dates to 1946, when the city had a team called the Ironmen in the Basketball Association of America, a precursor to the NBA.
Swank also said the ABA has given Pittsburgh a strong tipoff to the season by allowing the city to play host to the league's "Kickoff weekend," Oct. 28-30.
