During the 1985 Atlantic Hurricane Season, there were a total of 11 named storms including one in late November (Hurricane Kate).
As Hurricane Gloria churned up the waters of the North Atlantic from its tropical origins off the African Coast and Cape Verde Islands to its ultimate demise in the Canadian Maritimes, the media began to cover it as the Storm of the Century, a term, which has also been used several times since September, 1985.

Five hurricanes (Dennis, Katrina, Ophelia, Rita and Wilma) and three tropical storms (Arlene, Cindy and Tammy) directly impacted the U.S. Letters of the Greek alphabet were used to name storms for the first time since storms began acquiring names in 1953, as Hurricane Wilma exhausted the original list of 21 names.

An early hurricane can be defined as occurring in the three months prior to the start of the season, and a late hurricane can be defined as occurring in the three months after the season.
With these criteria the earliest observed hurricane in the Atlantic was on March 7, 1908, while the latest observed hurricane was on December 31, 1954, the second "Alice" of that year which persisted as a hurricane until January 5, 1955.
In terms of central pressure (and probably winds), the strongest observed hurricane in the Atlantic basin was Gilbert in 1988 with a pressure of 888 millibars in the northwest Caribbean.

 SciGuy: '06 Hurricane Season: Proof the climate isn't changing?
I do completely agree that the assertion that hurricanes in 2005 were the result of global warming is ridiculous and Gore's use of it as a premise (and, worse yet, the suffering it caused as a motivator) caused me to lose some respect for a guy I generally liked previously.
The only thing emerging about hurricanes and GW claims is that the GW evangelists are hgijacking hurricane studies, just like they have climatolgy, to support their faith.

Note – the difference between say a Hurricane Landfall and a Landfalling Hurricane, is one hurricane can have many “Hurricane Landfalls” but is still only One “Landfalling Hurricane” if it does landfall.
In fact, Wilma is close to Category 4 status - the 5 pm Oct. 24 Hurricane Hunter flight found winds at 10,000 feet of 157 mph, which normally translates to a surface wind of 140 mph - Category 4 winds.
