Hurricanes have been very beneficial in stopping long droughts in some areas, and they make up an important contribution to the long-term rainfall in areas like the Southeastern U.S. In more human terms, I like to think that hurricanes offer us a chance to reflect on our place in nature.

Nonetheless, the death toll in Cuba is the highest since 1963, when Hurricane Flora was blamed for 1200 deaths.
Dennis also bolsters earlier predictions that this would be an active hurricane season, with William Gray of Colorado State University predicting a total of 15 named storms and eight named hurricanes.

FAQ: HURRICANES, TYPHOONS AND TROPICAL CYCLONES (Part 1 of 2)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Hurricane Andrew is a good example of a very intense tropical cyclone (922 mb central pressure and 64 m/s (125 kt) sustained winds at landfall in Florida) that was also relatively small (15 m/s winds extended out only about 150 km from the center).
A concentric eyewall cycle occurred in Hurricane Andrew (1992) before landfall near Miami: a strong intensity was reached, an outer eyewall formed, this contracted in concert with a pronounced weakening of the storm, and as the outer eyewall completely replaced the original one the hurricane reintensified.
Thus an Atlantic hurricane that is given a CI number of 4.5 (winds of 77 kt and pressure of 979 mb) could in reality be anywhere from winds of 60 to 90 kt and pressures of 989 to 969 mb.

EXTENDED RANGE FORECAST OF ATLANTIC SEASONAL HURRICANE ACTIVITY FOR 2005
We foresee a slightly above-average hurricane season for the Atlantic basin in 2005.
We estimate that 2005 will have about 6 hurricanes (average is 5.9), 11 named storms (average is 9.6), 55 named storm days (average is 49), 25 hurricane days (average is 24.5), 3 intense (category 3-4-5) hurricanes (average is 2.3), and 6 intense hurricane days (average is 5.0).
We attribute the heightened Atlantic major hurricane activity of 2004 season as well as the increased Atlantic major hurricane activity of the previous nine years to be a consequence of the multidecadal fluctuations in the Atlantic Ocean thermohaline circulation (THC) as we have been discussing in our Atlantic basin seasonal hurricane forecasts for several years.
