It is a declaration and statement of legislative intent that field archaeology on privately owned lands should be discouraged except in accordance with both the provisions and spirit of sections 1 to 14; and persons having knowledge of the location of archaeological sites are encouraged to communicate such information to the state archaeologist.
The director of the Minnesota historical society may also issue a license to a qualified person, either in connection with the right to engage in field archaeology on a specified site, or alone, to engage in purely preliminary or exploratory activities in a specified area where a site is thought to exist.
Annually, and also upon leaving office, the state archaeologist shall file with the director of the historical society a full report of his activities including a summary of the activities of his licensees, from the effective date hereof or from the date of the last full report of the state archaeologist.

H-Net Review: Charles C. Kolb on History of Latin American Archaeology
Phase A: Proto-State Archaeology (corresponding to Hroch's Phase A) is suggested when archaeology does not have significant support by the state, is conducted in the main by foreigners and entrepreneurial amateurs working in historical archaeology (churches, forts, and houses) and in fine arts conservation or restoration programs (murals, pottery, and so on).
Archaeology as practiced in the United States has three distinct parameters (academic, governmental, and museographic) but in Mexico archaeology is almost completely governmental and only minimally university-based.
The history of the national museum; Manuel Gamio's contributions to Mexican archaeology, the "burying" of academic archaeology, and the use of the scientific method (stratigraphic excavations); the legacy of the Mexican Revolution; and the establishment of INAH by Alfonso Caso are featured.

 Indiana Jones and Archaeology
The last aspect which helped expand the public’s view of archaeology was the portrayal of the dig at Tanis, the site of the Ark. The dig was shown as a huge effort in uncomfortable, extremely hot conditions conducted in the middle of nowhere in a foreign land.
Although not truthful for all of archaeology, this was more common of the field in the past and the film portrayed it as it was and is, time-consuming and difficult.
A normal archaeology site will be worked on for years, studying each aspect of the culture from the pieces that are obtained from the ground but also from other sources such as written and oral.

Archaeology and the Book of Mormon
Consequently, nearly all of the literature produced by Mormon writers in the field of archaeology has been on an amateur level, and therefore is marked by its lack of objectivity and scholarship, since the writers lacked the professional training essential to producing acceptable work.
Biblical archaeology can be studied because we do know where Jerusalem and Jericho were and are, but we do not know where Zarahemla and Bountiful (nor any location for that matter) were or are.
We shall now show that American archaeology has not only failed to verify the 'Book of Mormon', but that it has caused a division among Latter-day Saints concerning the interpretation of the geographical references in the 'Book of Mormon', and is forcing Latter-day saints to make a heart-searching decision which has eternal consequences.

The theoretical approach to rock art developed by David Lewis-Williams, David S. Whitley and many others, is arguably well ahead of the discipline of archaeology as a whole and incorporates the study of ethnohistory, relevant common biological phenomena studied by experimental medical science, and an understanding of the "artifacts" themselves.
One of the other appealing aspects of rock art is that it is a form of archaeology intimately tied to the larger landscape, and the experience of stone and massive bedrock in natural settings.
There is also an aspect of experimental archaeology to the study of rock art since measurement, weathering rates, and reconstruction of the techniques and methods of the rock artists can be a very informative exercise.

Excavations at the village of Rakhigarhi in Haryana, about 150 kilometers from Delhi, are expected to reveal important information on the Harappa and Mohenjodaro civilizations, dating between 2800 BC and 3500 BC.

The Rakhigarhi relics were first discovered by archaeologist Acharya Bhagwan Dev and subsequently, in 1963, another noted Indian archaeologist, Suraj Bhan confirmed that the origins were indeed Harappan.
