Country music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Country music, also called country and western music or country-western, is an amalgam of popular musical forms developed in the Southern United States, with roots in traditional folk music, Celtic Music, Blues, Gospel music, and Old-time music.
Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family are widely considered to be the founders of country music, and their songs were first captured at an historic recording session in Bristol, Tennessee on August 1, 1927, where Ralph Peer was the talent scout and sound recordist.
Even today the variety of country music is not usually well reflected in radio airplay and the popular perception of country music is still influenced by the maudlin ballads and whining steel guitars that many people still associate with the genre.

Country music lyrics about workers reveal that the men and women they portray are aware of their status as members of the working class, sometimes painfully so.
Despite the frequent references in country music lyrics to the working class status of its writers and performers, and of the music's audience, country music is devoid of practically any hint of class consciousness.
Country music lyrics also reveal why trade unionism and class consciousness, despite the overwhelming evidence of class awareness, are not supported by the music's working class audience.

While the bulk of country song material of his time was dealing with the pangs of lost, found or unrequited love, Haggard was digging deep within his own emotional background and setting his dark and somber experience to music.
As a result, that music is not only resounded in such typical entertainment channels as radio, records and concert dates, but has also been integrated into the university classroom setting where students examine the sociological implications of his works.

There was, and still is, great music in other parts of England as well, most notably Bob Cann, all round entertainer and spectacular melodeon player from Dartmoor in Devon, or Willy Atkinson (mouth organ) from Alnwick in the North East and these musicians soon came to a wider audience at Festivals and through LP releases.
It should be clear from all of this that English Country Music is functional dance music and that this explains the firm rhythm and lack of ornamentation which are intended to help the dancers.
