When Edmonton businessman Bill Comrie and the CFL rescued the team late in the season, the Lions were well on their way to recording their worst record since their humble beginnings in 1954.
In 1963, coached by Dave Skrien and led by the quarterbacking of Joe Kapp, the Lions appeared in their first GREY CUP, losing 21-10 to Hamilton, but came back in 1964 to defeat the Tiger-Cats 34-24.
The Lions lost Flutie to Calgary prior to the 1992 season, and Pezim walked away from the team in mid-season.

They were the first American Football League team to win 13 games in a season (1964); were one of only three teams to appear in an AFL championship game for three successive years; and the only AFL team to apear in the playoffs four straight years, 1963 through 1966.
Doug Flutie (born October 23, 1962) is an American football and a former Canadian football (CFL) quarterback.
Balancing their defensive prowess, the Bills had offensive muscle as well, in stars such as running backs Cookie Gilchrist and Wray Carlton, quarterbacks Jack Kemp and Daryle Lamonica, and receivers Elbert Dubenion and Ernie Warlick.

By the end of the 1964 football season, Abner was the AFL’s all time touchdown leader with 53 touchdowns and the League’s third leading career ground gainer.
Haynes has represented professional athletes in negotiations with the NFL, CFL and the WFL.
As a testament to his contributions to athletics, Abner Haynes ws honored in 1985 by the National Collegiate Athletic Association with the prestigious NCAA "Silver Anniversary Award".
