The 1964 season proved to be more competitive than 1963, with Ferrari, Brabham, BRM and Lotus winning races and the Championship going down the wire to the last race in Mexico, with Clark, Surtees and Hill still in contention.
The 1964 Championship season began at Monaco on May 10, 1964, where Clark qualified on pole, was 3 seconds ahead of Brabham on the first lap and was to lead for the first 30 laps of the 100 lap race.
By the time of the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring on August 2, 1964, the reliability of the Ferrari engines was coming to the fore and Surtees finished first with teammate Lorenzo Bandini in third, Clark having gone out with engine problems at half-distance.

I remember that 1962 German Grand Prix at Nurburgring, when on the start line he forgot to switch his fuel pumps on, and so was left behind at the start.
Similarly, in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in 1967 he did something which up to that point I, and I think most people, had felt was impossible.
This could have been due to the fact that the second Grand Prix race he ever did was at Spa when his team mate Alan Stacey met with a fatal accident, and I think this sort of thing made a lasting impression on him.

In 1964 Clark came within just a few laps of retaining his crown, but just as in 1962, an oil leak from the engine robbed him of the title, this time conceding to John Surtees.
He had to miss the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix in order to compete at Indianapolis, but made history by driving the first mid-engined car to win at the fabled "Brickyard," as well as becoming the only driver to date to win both that race and the F1 title in the same year.
From the Italian Grand Prix onward Lotus used the more complex BRM H16 engine in the Lotus 43 car, with which Clark won the United States Grand Prix.

Hopes of a Grand Prix swansong with McLaren in 1994, thanks to French engine supplier Peugeot, were disappointed when team boss Ron Denis chose Martin Brundle instead, even though Philippe had a run-out in place of the suspened Mika Hakkinen in the Hungarian Gramd Prix.
This form earned him a drive with Ferrari for 1959, and he stared his second season with the Italian team by finishing second in the Argentinian Grand Prix, but he was thrown from his car in practice at Monaco and broke an arm, leaving him on the sidelines for the remainder of the season.
It almost went right in the French Grand Prix at Clermont-Ferrand in 1972 though, as the race was his for the taking when he suffered a puncture and fell back to third place.
