Archaeology is the study of past people through their material remains: tools, dishes, food remains, buildings, burials, etc. Historical archaeology is the study of past people through their material remains when written texts for that period are also available.
The idea behind this early form of historic archaeology was to mask social conflict in the past and to mute social critique in the present.
For example, according to Deetz (1977:5), "historical archaeology is the archaeology of the spread of European cultures throughout the world since the fifteenth century and their impact on and interaction with the cultures of indigenous peoples." This worldwide expansion was one aspect of the growth of capitalism.

 What is Archaeology?
From just these few descriptions, it should be obvious that archaeology is a “many-sided affair,” and what archaeology means can greatly vary depending what side a person is on (Kenyon 1961: 22).
Because archaeology is a method of “finding out about the past of the human race in its material aspects, and the study of the products of this past” it is essential that it is conducted in a disciplined, exacting manner or else much could be irretrievably lost (Kenyon 1961: 9).
Whether archaeology is a fleeting interest, a hobby, or a career, it is a means in which everyone can learn about the past and how it impacts our future.

When I first came to UCLA in the distant fall of 1965 archaeology on campus was astir - or I should perhaps speak of "archaeologies." In fact, you may say that the stir was aimed at overcoming, precisely, the plural!
And so it took four years, between November 29, 1965, and March 27, 1969, for four different proposals to be crafted, the last being the one that found all in agreement and led to the beginning of the Archaeology Program in the fall of 1969, under Clem Meighan.
The years 1965 to 1969 were the gestation period for the Interdepartmental Program, and the next four years, 1969 to 1973, were the gestation period for the Institute of Archaeology.
