  1960's comic books
A study of some of the best Marvel comic books of the sixties is coming, but someone else will have to do it, because I preferred the simple and less serious approach to storytelling that DC took to the angst ridden Marvel heroes of the time.
Kurt Shaffenberger was one of the slickest artist in DC's stable, and the 'Lois Lane' comics of the sixties were a lot of fun to read mostly because of his unique renderings of the DC stable of characters.
These comic books are ice cream for the brain, and much of the reason they are so much fun has to do with Shaffenberger's pristine style and the light-hearted, nonsensical stories.

Opinions 57 - What Price for Realism? (May 2001)
When debating the virtues of comics in 1965 versus comics in 1995 (and beyond), the advocates of one generation frequently find the material of the other wanting in a number of key respects.
Comics seldom get out the electron micrograph to depict the digestive activities of characters, either, but we need not take this to mean that none of them ever eat, digest, or excrete.
Furthermore, with many comics outside of humor comics dealing with heroes thrust into problems that they ultimately must overcome, we impose, with one stroke, a rapid doom for intrepid adventurers whom actuarial tables would predict should have died a long time ago from the various occupational hazards of their professions.

There's another peculiar element to this comic-- it has pop-up ads.
The Unitas ad is pretty cool-- it features a comic-panelled recreation of the 1958 NFL Championship, which the Colts won in overtime, 23-17.

A common perception surrounding this comic, which was drawn by Tony Tallarico, was that the writer (and creator) of the comic was unknown.
The comic, which was to be called, Marvels: Cops and Robbers, never materialized, mostly because Busiek did not feel as though the artist chosen for the project completely meshed with his vision of the comic.
Hell, in 1965 there was still a sign at the limits of Garland Texas that read, “N* don’t let the sun fall on you in this town” I bring this up because I can totally see a comic book with a fl hero on the cover to be refused at the distributor level.

Comic books have been a major part of the American cultural landscape since the birth of the medium in the first part of the 20th Century.
Towards the end of the 1940s' the popularity of the super-hero comic characters began to wane, and the industry publications focused on crime, humor, horror, westerns, and romance stories.
As the Silver-Age drew to a close, comics entered an age of fantasy, a new era of horror comics, and relevant stories that focused on social issues such as the population problem, and the women's' liberation movement.

As is often the case when comic book characters do things of that nature, he emerged super-powered instead of dead.

In 1965, Archie Comics revived almost all the old MLJ superheroes, at least for a walk-on in its Mighty Crusaders comic book.

Any Dell comic that ties in with a film or TV property, no matter how obscure, now has a far greater chance of selling than it did prior to the introduction of the Internet.
Clearly, this particular new audience isn't one that appears at comics conventions, but they are removing a remarkable number of low-grade Silver Age comics from the overall comics market.

ACTION COMICS NO.287, (April 1962 cover by Curt Swan & George Klein), is considered the 14th appearance of the Legion in the second story of the issue entitled "Supergirl's Greatest Challenge" by Jerry Siegel and Jim Mooney.
When Jim came to National Periodical Publications was influenced by the Marvel comics of that years (1965-1966) and he made the contrary of Edmond Hamilton giving emphasis to the characters and action more than the argument and with Curt Swan and George Klein they put the series in a higher level of popularity.
