Democracy in Kingston: A Social Movement in Urban Politics, 1965--1970. by Don Higgins   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The spirit of the times was optimism that social and political change was both necessary and possible, coupled with activism that attached much importance to mass participation "processeso by which decisions should be made.
Further, the conception of `political' was broadened from previously narrow association with formal governmental apparatus to virtually all aspects of personal and community life.
Political scientists may find his concepts and analysis to be thin and his premise/conclusion regarding social class as an explanatory variable in Kingston to be more in the realm of assertion than empirically or logically demonstrated.

Politics, which, the planet over, are the fly in the amber, the worm in the bud, the rift in the loot....
Political language--and with variations this is true of all political parties, from conservatives to anarchists--is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.
The political characters, political dependencies and political connection of men, being of a public nature, differ exceedingly from the circumstances of private life; and are in many instances so nearly related to the measures they propose, that to prevent our being deceived by the last, we must be acquainted with the first.

Through the period between 1892 - 1965 the politics within the community went through various stages of activism, from individual resistance, to collective resistance to accommodation and afterwards again to collective protest only to be squashed again with the obliteration of the Indonesian communist party.

H-Net Review: Gordon E Harvey on Democracy Heading South: National Politics in the Shadow of Dixie   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
By examining current national political trends through the historical lens of Solid South politics, Cochran argues that current national politics have come to reflect the worst of the Solid South: elections that were "empty, issueless affairs at one level and, at another, maniacally focused on a single issue: white supremacy.
For example, his list of indictments against Southern politics before 1965, and modern American politics as well, includes the lament that party activity and association are declining, thus causing a corresponding decline in the scope of democracy.
Granted, American politics today does not appear at times to be entirely democratic, with its obsession with big money, the overabundance of one-dimensional candidates who play on the racial and class fears of voters, and the ever-increasing feeling that the common voter has little voice in who gets elected.
