1965 CHEVELLE AUDIO   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
1965: Despite the subtle changes in the appearance of the AM radios for '65, this was an important year for the Chevelle line.
The dial lacks the "bowtie" emblem, but the radio's basic appearance is almost exactly the same as its pushbutton counterpart.
These radios were the only ones in the era to be produced without the traditional slide bar (am/fm switch).

 Pirate Memories - King Radio
Radio Invicta was unfortunately beset with difficulties, and was taken over in February 1965.
KING Radio began broadcasting in March 1965, with a middle of the road format, steering clear of the continuous pop output prefered by Radio Caroline and Radio London.
KING Radio was short lived, never really grabbing listeners attention, and local businesses could not be tempted to advertise of the station known locally as the 'station on sticks'.

 Pirate Radio by Barry Taylor
Although there had been a Dutch "pirate", Radio Veronica, operating since 1960, this was the first of the UK "pirates" and they were to change completely the style and sound of British radio.
Radio Caroline was soon joined by other ships and the EBU Review in its 'International News' section started printing reports 'On the high seas'.
On 21 January 1965, the Council of Europe adopted a convention in favour of prohibiting pirate broadcasting stations.

From the front, the 3000 is instantly distinguishable from 1000 by its big square nameplate on the lower left of the cover.
This radio still has the original book, which slips into a compartment in the front cover.
As with the 1000, its weak points are the fragile carrying handle (always carry the radio from the bottom!) and thin chrome plating, which tends to blister.

There was no weather radio network in 1965, rather just a few transmitters that served the coast and a few population centers.
In those days, there were few commercial radio and television stations connected to the weather wire or involved in the warning process.
The NOAA Weather Radio network was enlarged each year as new transmitters were installed and more of the country was placed under the protective communications umbrella.

In the final analysis, the name chosen for the format at KHJ in 1965 is not really as important as the cultural and financial impact the station had on the radio broadcasting industry.
The name “Boss Radio” was neither trademarked nor copyrighted, so it is not surprising to find that name used by other radio stations to promote themselves in their local market.
But, KIMN also used the imagery of “Denver’s tiger” and the name “Boss Radio” was not used in the same wall-to-wall imagery way that it was in Los Angeles at KHJ, however.

WOR Radio was typical of the nonnetwork metropolitan stations partially affected by the power drop.

1965 Watts Riots Police Radio Calls
On Wednesday August 11, 1965 rioting broke out in the Watts area of Los Angeles, following the arrest of a suspected drunk driver by California Highway Patrol officers.
It was fortunate timing to make the recording, as later that night LAPD made a quick switchover to the VHF band for the dispatchers; the move had already been in the planning stages for a while, but the likelihood of rioters using "police calls" for their advantage prompted LAPD to make the switch that night.
Another complication was that units coming in from divisions in the San Fernando Valley had quite a bit of trouble communicating with the dispatchers on their "Valley" frequency (2366 kcs).
