Honda Y2K: The Rising Sun Rises Again
As one Formula One season gives way to the next in Suzuka, Japan, about the most exciting news in Formula One circles is also from the Pacific (wheel) Rim: the full-fledged return of Honda to Formula One as a Constructor in the Year 2000.
With the introduction in 1966 of the 3-litre formula, Honda had to go back to the drawing boards and was unable to capitalize immediately on the success it enjoyed at Mexico City in its 1.5-litre car in the last race of the 1965 season.
It is ironic, given the relatively disappointing 1966 season Honda had, that the quasi-Honda cars of that era are in a sense immortalized in the movie "Grand Prix", which was filmed by John Frankheimer during the 1966 Formula One season, when Honda in actuality only competed in three races.

In their first season they achieved two poles, one victory (Berger at the Mexican GP) and 6th place in the constructor's championship and they have improved steadily ever since.
Their F1 debut came in 1966 and their first GP win was in 1968 in Belgium with Bruce himself at the wheel.
The high point of the season, during which Minardi did not score any points, was Martini's front row start at the U.S. In 1991 Minardi adopted the V12 Ferrari engine and after struggling with it at the beginning of the season finished 7th in the constructor's championship.

However, this formula is not markedly more accurate than simply saying that the expected winning percentage in one-run games is the same as the ratio of runs scored to runs allowed.
A formula which states the normal ratio between winning percentage and one-run winning percentage for one of these teams can't possibly work for the other one.
In his four seasons they were negative 4.5, positive 3.6, negative 9.4 and negative 10.7, a total of 20.98 wins below expectation in his four seasons as a manager.

In 1996 he had another difficult season scoring an early 6th place at Argentina but failing to score any more points as the ddvelopment of the car was halted with the sale of the team to Tom Walkinshaw.

Jim Clark's 1966 Formula One season   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Lotus planned to meet the new 3-litre formula with a new chassis (though not until Spa) and an untried engine, the complicated BRM H16.
Clark's close friend Jackie Stewart (two physically similar but emotionally opposite characters, one would think) saw his 1966 season destroyed by persistent failures of the H16, and Clark was faring little better.
The season was being dominated by Brabham who was driving very well and enjoying a car that was as robust as he was.

 F1A&G - Jackie Stewart
In between, Stewart won the F1 World Championship three times (including 1973, his final season), finished second twice, broke Clark's record for career GP wins and almost single-handedly ushered in the modern era of F1 driver safety.
ome of this was self-preservation, as Stewart's crash in the 1966 Belgian GP ended with him trapped in the cockpit with petrol pouring over him, and later driven in the back of a pick-up truck to non-existent hospital facilities littered with cigarette butts.
Although it would be 14 years, until Alain Prost's 1987 victory at Estoril, before another F1 pilot surpassed his 27 victories, in that time Jackie Stewart became synonymous with Formula One world-wide from his roles as F1 commentator and Ford Motor Co. spokesman.

In 1966 the Marxist South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) guerrilla group launched a war of independence for the area that was soon named Namibia, but it was not until 1988 that South Africa agreed to end its administration in accordance with a UN peace plan for the entire region.
Nauru's phosphate deposits began to be mined early in the 20th century by a German-British consortium; the island was occupied by Australian forces in World War I. Nauru achieved independence in 1968 and joined the UN in 1999.
The population of the island continues to drop (from a peak of 5,200 in 1966 to about 2,100 in 2002) with substantial emigration to New Zealand, 2,400 km to the southwest.

The highlight of his international career was in 1978 when he won six Formula One races and became the second American (Phil Hill was the first in 1961) to win the world championship.

Now 72 and the oldest surviving Formula One champion, Brabham will drive one of the 20 original cars expected to be on the grid around the south Australian street circuit for the "Formula Adelaide" race.
Fatalities, thankfully rare in the last decade of Formula One as technology has allowed drivers to walk away from high-speed shunts, were frequent.

To those of us who followed his career in international motor racing, his death on April 7 in a Formula Two race at Hockenheim, Germany, was unbelievable.
Jim Clark succeeded in the World Driver's Championship, the Indianapolis 500 and Indy car racing, the British and European Touring Car Championships, the Tasman Cup, the British and European Formula Two Championships, won races in the Lotus 23B and the difficult Lotus 30 sports cars, and proved adept at rallying and even NASCAR racing.
Even when Lotus was struggling, such as during the frustrating 1966 Formula One season, Clark resisted the temptation to change teams in search of a better car.

More importantly, and pointedly, was the fact borne out that indeed not anyone could win with Ferrari.
