World Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In baseball, the World Series is the championship series of Major League Baseball in the United States and Canada, played in October after the end of the regular season between the pennant winner of the American League and the pennant winner of the National League.
The Series winner is determined through a best-of-seven playoff (except in 1903, 1919, 1920 and 1921 when the winner was determined through a best-of-nine playoff) and is awarded the World Series Trophy, as well as World Series rings.
These series' were arranged by the individual teams, not by the leagues directly, the same as the 1880s World's Series matches had been, and which had often proved troublesome.

Baseball Toaster : Mike's Baseball Rants
For those of you how are two young to remember, Hoyt won 24 games for the White Sox back in 1983, when they had a cartoon batter logo on the front of their uniforms and Harold Baines was the mayor of Chicago.
There are some great pitchers who "took it to the next level" in the postseason and some marginal pitchers, like Backe, who did the same, though their "next level" was competence.
Hoyt won the Cy Young despite a 3.66 ERA, 1.24 runs higher than league leader Rick "Don't Call me BJ" Honeycutt (who was traded midseason to the NL), and 115 adjusted ERA (52 points worse than Honeycutt).

However, the worst player by far on the list was Bob Wickman, who received one ninth-place vote (2 points), because he was basically the Indians closer and had a decent year (2.47 ERA, 45 saves).
For those of you how are two young to remember, Hoyt won 24 games for the White Sox back in 1983, when they had a cartoon batter logo on the front of their uniforms and Harold Baines was the mayor of Chicago.
I wish that they just had the research committee sit down and come up with a final list instead of going to another ballot, but then again, that could produce the kind of single-mindedness and cronyism that has plagued the Vets since day one.

Integration became a fact of baseball life so quickly that by the mid-1950s there were more African-American players on major league teams than there had been in the Negro leagues at their height of popularity just a decade earlier.
scandal tarnished the game, tainting the achievements of some of baseball's stars and forcing the leagues to introduce testing for steroids in 2003 and to suspend players for their use in 2005.

USATODAY.com - Baseball great Ted Williams dies
Between baseball, Williams became a Hall of Fame angler who feasted on fish in Florida, Canada and many other places with friends as varied as Stephen King, Bobby Knight and Curt Gowdy.
He irritated plenty of people, but it is because he irritated pitchers most — he often called them "the dumbest people in the world" — that he was and is a baseball icon.
"Gods do not answer letters," wrote Updike, maybe remembering the photo of Red Sox fans carrying a banner calling Williams "God's gift to baseball." Gods move in mysterious ways, their wonders to perform.

In addition to its interest as a sheer narrative of accomplishment, the story of black baseball is a vital component of the broader story of U.S. race relations that has assumed such a central location in the historiography of our era.
Yet he was not without hope: in encouraging the young black man to consider a baseball career he explained that "honest efforts with his great ability will open an avenue in the near future wherein he may walk hand-in-hand with the opposite race in the greatest of all American games - base ball" (67).
