Archaeology and Its Public: A Voegelinian Perspective
The view of archaeology as being a detached, objective science of the past is slowly giving way to a broader perspective, driven in part by the need to make archaeology more relevant to a broader non-professional audience.
Similarly archaeology is conceived of as a science for studying buried artifactual remains and constructing a fairly objective view of past cultures and events.
At the beginning of this essay it was noted that the challenge to archaeology is to effectively address a lay public.

Swords and "Cimeters" in the Book of Mormon - FARMS JBMS
For our knowledge we are primarily dependent on the recorded testimony of those who saw the weapons in use during the short conquest period, for they were soon displaced by European arms.
There is no evidence from Mesoamerican archaeology or traditions to indicate the use of any metal in the manufacture of swords, other than as occasional decoration, although we may not have the final word on that matter.
But we do not need to interpret Nephi's statement "after the manner of" as meaning that the swords he produced were of the same material as Laban's sword, only that their general pattern was similar—a straight double-edged slashing implement, in contrast to a cimeter.
