The mission of Army Aviation is to find, fix, and destroy the enemy through fire and maneuver; and to provide combat, combat service and combat service support in coordinated operations as an integral member of the combined arms team.
In 1967, it was the Second Airmobile Division, 101st Airborne from Fort Campbell, KY that deployed to Southeast Asia.
Notwithstanding Aviation's other contributions, the mission that made it such a part of every soldier's vocabulary during the war was medical evacuation, more commonly referred to as "Dustoff".

The Army Aviation Museum, at least in concept, was officially established on 17 April 1956.
For over ten years, the Army Aviation Museum existed only through the hard work and dedication of a handful of senior aviation officers and civilians, who slowly added to the collection of aircraft and memorabilia.
With the approval of a comprehensive long-range plan to include the mission for development and operation of the museum in the spring of 1967, the Museum was relocated to building T-6007 and formally opened its doors to the public on 26 November 1968.

Shortly after the 82d Aviation Brigade was activated, the Cavalry Squadron joined the Brigade and at the time assumed responsibilities for the Division's Long Range Surveillance Detachment.
The 82d Aviation Brigade was officially activated on 15 January 1987, consolidating all of the Division's aviation assets under the brigade colors.
In August 1990, the Aviation Brigade formed a portion of the initial deployment force from the 82d Airborne Division deployed to Saudi Arabia as the early arriving US Forces for Operation Desert Shield, flying border patrol and related missions immediately upon arrival.
