Binghamton Unversity Bulletin - English General Literature, and Rhetoric
Although English and American literature and the practice of creative and expository writing are primary, the department conceives of neither literature nor writing in a narrow or parochial way.
Literature courses deal broadly with genres and themes from the past and present, and teach students how to read and analyze texts; creative writing courses foster, in qualified students, the development of serious creativity; rhetoric courses deal with both the theory and practice of communication as well as the history of oral and written argument.
Courses in literature, rhetoric, and creative writing numbered 100-149 are entry-level, intended mainly for freshmen; courses numbered 150-299 are open to second-semester freshmen or above; courses numbered 300-499 are open only to juniors, seniors, or those who have previously taken three courses in literature.

Theology Today - Vol 24, No. 2 - July 1967 - BOOK REVIEW - Literature and the Christian Life   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
TeSelle's third thesis is that literature greatly facilitates a Christian's maturation of insight into the context in which he responds to God and man. Because a good novel both reflects and revises the basic structure of human experience, it can help the Christian acquire a feeling of the unique realities of each concrete situation.
Letting novels serve this function constitutes the central relationship between the Christian and literature because it is based on the nature of literature itself as well as on the Christian's need.
It may turn out that literature is important not so much in illumining a particular neighbor's need as in training us to treat him the way a novelist treats his characters: as a unique person in a particular situation.

John Barth, “The Literature of Exhaustion” (1967)
By “exhaustion” I don’t mean anything so tired as the subject of physical, moral, or intellectual decadence, only the used-upness of certain forms or the felt exhaustion of certain possibilities – by no means necessarily a cause for despair.
He has the first half of our century under his belt, but not on his back.
What my essay “The Literature of Exhaustion” was really about, so it seems to me now, was the effective “exhaustion” not of language or of literature, but of the aesthetic of high modernism: that admirable, not-to be-repudiated, but essentially completed “program” of what Hugh Kenner has dubbed “the Pound era.”
