High-speed rail is a type of passenger rail transport that operates significantly faster than the normal speed of rail traffic.
Railways were the first form of mass transportation, and until the development of the motorcar in the early 20th century had an effective monopoly on land transport.
Rail networks, like highways, require large fixed capital investments and thus require a blend of high density and government investment to be competitive against existing capital infrastructure for aircraft and automobiles.

Reports and images of fatal rail accidents at Southall, Ladbroke Grove, Hatfield and Potters Bar all figure prominently in the public perception of rail safety but the evidence does not support the widely held view that safety has worsened in the 10 years since the break-up of British Rail.
"Rail accidents get enormous media coverage and there is great public outcry over them," he says, contrasting coverage of rail accidents with that of a recent road accident near Brighton (eight fatalities in May).

 Sir Peter Parker - Telegraph
He sought to apply his ideals to the running of British Rail, but in some respects found it a disenchanting experience; for he had to confront the three railway unions, and their deeply entrenched traditions, with the realities of 20th century economics and technology.
But his tenure was also marked by what he saw as a lack of investment on the part of both Labour and Conservative governments; because of this, he saw his job as a constant battle to shore up what he called "the crumbling edge of quality".
In 1967 Parker was asked by the Transport Minister, Barbara Castle, to be chairman of British Rail.

Argentine Rail Transport Problems, The Waggon Bottleneck.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that the economic and efficient use of railway transport equipment is of primary importance for the country's economy as a whole if its produce is to reach world markets at competitive prices, and the domestic standard of living be maintained.
On the particular subject of rail transport, while steps are now being taken to improve the locomotive position, particularly as regards "dieselisation"--dealt with in a previous article*--the real bottleneck of the railway goods situation in Argentina is the current shortage of waggons.
The answer is simple: an enormous increase of transport cost by using all and every kind of uneconomical transportation vehicle, a substantial and uneconomical extension of the transportation period, incalculable losses due to deterioration of produce whilst waiting for waggons, etc. Naturally, all this does not show up directly as the fault of the railways.

British Transport Historical Records - Staff - Your Archives
The Records of the various private companies and other bodies employed in the transport industry were taken over by the British Transport Commission in 1948 under The Transport Act 1947; these and records transferred subsequently by the various nationalised transport undertakings constitute the British Transport Collection now held by The National Archives.
Each group is divided into series; in the case of RAIL records these number over 1100, most of them being the records of the individual railway, dock, harbour or canal companies.
It is not possible in a short note even to summarise the contents of the records; the classification adopted by the British Transport Historical Records before their transfer to the National Archives does however give a fair idea what may be found in the records of any particular company.

Rail transport is seen as less efficient and is therefore disfavored, despite its potential advantages.
The mass of containers transported by road also suggests that one of the advantages of a smaller number of load breakages favors this means of transport as compared to rail transportation, despite that fact that the railways should theoretically be more competitive.
Among the various deficiencies of rail traffic described so far, greater emphasis must be placed on the really fundamental problem: the greatest obstacle to an increase in rail traffic consists in the nation-by-nation management of the railways, in the sense that the railways remain the property of each individual state.

This despite most of the rail service having been phased out and the remaining section deliberately allowed to run down, several new bus routes had been introduced and increases in bus fares had been implemented from July 31 of that year.
Almost immediately Government recognised, tacitly, that it had erred in closing down the rail service, because the bus service, which would be hit later by the work stoppage of April, 1969, from which it is only now recovering 38 years later, was unable to handle the increased demand for bus seats.
But whatever it chose to call the private commercial passenger transport units it was the clearest admission, up to then, of its monumental error of judgment in the closure of the rail service.
