 Science in Christian Perspective
Historians and philosophers of science of all shades of political opinion are agreed that it is high time to reappraise the status and uses of science in the light of the considerable amount of historical analysis since the War.
When the results of studies on the cognitive structure of science are added to those on the scientific community and on individual men and women within it, the case for a social dimension to science becomes unanswerable.
What the radical critique of science has done is to add to these a number of others in which science is pursued for reasons that see it as a means to an end which is often political and rarely to do with science alone.

 Science Quotes and Sayings
Science is facts; just as houses are made of stones, so is science made of facts; but a pile of stones is not a house and a collection of facts is not necessarily science.  ~Henri Poincaré
The radical novelty of modern science lies precisely in the rejection of the belief, which is at the heart of all popular religion, that the forces which move the stars and atoms are contingent upon the preferences of the human heart.  ~Walter Lippmann
Science is built up of facts, as a house is built of stones; but an accumulation of facts is no more a science than a heap of stones is a house.  ~Henri Poincaré, Science and Hypothesis, 1905

 European Political Science
Jan Barents, from 1948 the holder of the chair of political science at the University of Amsterdam, was a member of the IPSA Executive Committee between 1949 and 1955.
Since political science was a comparatively small discipline, and seriously tainted with its rebellious past, it was not able to muster enough political clout at the national level to protect its position.
According to Daalder, who carried out a survey of Dutch political science for the EJPR in 1991, the discipline is characterised by its 'modest size, research concentration on the Netherlands, substantial specialisation, and a generally strong awareness of international trends in the discipline' (Daalder, 1991: 298).

Because of this, by the mid-1960s BSFS eclipsed its neighbor, the Washington Science Fiction Association, in size and in being the 'in' place to be for parties and such.
This was not only due to BSFS's own growth and lack of interest in anything but fun, but also because WSFA itself lost Elizabeth Cullen and thus her wonderful house that had been the focal point of its meetings for more than a decade.
It bid for the 1967 World Science Fiction Convention, going to other conventions, throwing bid parties, distributing flyers, etc. We had a reputation for never closing a bid party at a con so long as even one person was there, so we were always the last hangout -- an obvious outgrowth of our never-ending weekends.

40+ Years of Earth Science (1958-1967)
This "bird's eye view" revolutionized Earth Sciences: the atmosphere, continents and oceans (and eventually the life forms which depend on them) could all be studied as a whole for the first time.
The greatest challenge faced by these NASA Earth Science pioneers was just 'getting there': putting a satellite in space, exactly where you want it, and then keeping it there was very difficult in the early days.
The Environmental Science Services Administration (ESSA) Satellite Program was initiated as an extension of, and a compliment to, the TIROS Program.

Among them are manuscripts of Isidore of Seville, Etymologiae, prepared in the 13th century in England; Bartholomaeus Anglicus, De proprietatibus rerum, translated into French and copied in France in the early 15th century; and Aristotle, De animalibus Book 18, translated into Latin by Michael Scot and copied in Italy in the late 13th century.
Together, the holdings of the Williams Andrews Clark Memorial Library in Los Angeles (12 miles distant) and the Huntington's collection of early British science are unsurpassed outside London.

Gould's article (later reprinted under the title ''Male Nipples and Clitoral Ripples'') ignited a war in the letters column of Natural History, though he was not the first to make the argument that the female orgasm serves no evolutionary purpose.
In ''The Case of the Female Orgasm: Bias in the Science of Evolution,'' published next month by Harvard University Press, Lloyd summarizes dozens of evolutionary accounts of the female orgasm - and knocks them all down.
In his 1967 pop-science classic ''The Naked Ape,'' the Oxford-trained zoologist Desmond Morris argued that the female orgasm evolved to cement the male-female pair bond, which gave offspring a survival advantage.

I have the feeling that the editors at the University of Chicago Press wanted this publication to stand out from all of the other science and technology dictionaries currently available, and that is why they chose to call this an encyclopedia instead.
Considering that many science dictionaries go out of date relatively quickly, perhaps this was a trade-off the publisher was willing to make.
I have no qualms recommending this book--the price is reasonable, the content coverage is pretty good for a book of this size, the publisher is reputable, and the illustrations are very well done.
