Democratic National Convention - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The primary goal of the Democratic National Convention is to nominate and confirm a candidate for President and Vice President, adopt a comprehensive party platform and unify the party.
The most historically notable--and tumultuous--convention of recent memory was the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, which was fraught with highly emotional battles between conventioneers and Vietnam war protesters and a notable outburst by Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley.
That convention itself was one of the most bizarre in American history, with sessions beginning in the early evening and lasting until sunrise the next morning, and outside political activists gaining influence at the expense of elected officials and core Democratic constituencies such as organized labor.

1968 Democratic National Convention - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1968 Democratic National Convention was held in Chicago, Illinois from August 26-29, 1968, by the United States Democratic Party, for the purposes of choosing the Democratic nominee for the 1968 U.S. Presidential Election.
The decision was particularly difficult for the Democrats that year, due to the split in the party over the Vietnam War, and the assassination of popular candidate Robert F. Kennedy.
The confusion of the convention, and the unhappiness of many liberals with the outcome, led the Democrats to begin reforms of their nominating process, increasing the role of primaries and decreasing the power of party delegates in the selection process.

Book Review: Battleground Chicago: The Police and the 1968 Democratic National Convention - Media Mouse
Frank Kusch's Battleground Chicago is an attempt to give the "other side" of the 1968 Democratic National Convention by seeking to interview a group of participants that have been largely ignored in previous studies, the Chicago Police Department, whom he interviewed during the period of 1999 to 2003.
Rather than provide an honest appraisal of the actions of the police, Kusch largely sanctions their actions, arguing that they were motivated by their perceptions of the protestors--as indeed all actions are--and uses the officers' feelings as a means of absolving them of responsibility for what happened.
Whereas the police are portrayed as a misunderstood entity that are not given the opportunity to tell their side of the story, Kusch's accounts provide numerous examples of a police force that acted with excessive and, by most evaluations, unjustifiable brutality.
