There was a five-week gap in the World Championship calendar after the German GP and after a season of rainfall and tragedy the F1 circus was able to take a break.
The organizers announced that if the two drivers did fly back to the United States and race there they would be banned from competing in the Italian race under a rule which forbade drivers to compete in an other event within 24 hours of the start of the Grand Prix.

The high spot of the motor racing career of Georges-Francis "Johnny" Servoz-Gavin, who has died aged 64, came in the 1968 Italian grand prix at Monza, where he was Jackie Stewart's team-mate in Ken Tyrrell's Matra International squad.
Servoz-Gavin was one of France's most promising formula one drivers, but he competed in only 12 world championship grands prix before retiring, after failing to qualify his Tyrrell team March 701 for the 1970 Monaco grand prix.
Servoz-Gavin finished fifth in the Spanish grand prix but had been worrying about his vision after a tree branch struck his face while he was driving an off-road vehicle the previous winter.

After Jackie Stewart damaged his wrist in a Formula 2 practice accident, Servoz-Gavin was given his big chance to drive the Tyrrell Matra-Ford in the 1968 Monaco Grand Prix where he qualified second and led for the first three laps before hitting the chicane barrier and breaking a driveshaft.
He finished second in the 1968 Italian Grand Prix at Monza and stayed with Matra to win the 1969 European Formula 2 Championship, dovetailing this with occasional outings in the four-wheel-drive Formula 1 Matra MS84 which he used to finish sixth in the Canadian Grand Prix.
In 1970 he was paired with Jackie Stewart in the Tyrrell team driving a March-Cosworth.
