 U B U W E B :: Joseph Kosuth - Art After Philosophy
Formalist art (painting and sculpture) is the vanguard of decoration, and, strictly speaking, one could reasonably assert that its art condition is so minimal that for all functional purposes it is not art at all, but pure exercises in aesthetics.
A work of art is a tautology in that it is a presentation of the artist’s intention, that is, he is saying that that particular work of art is art, which means, is a definition of art.
The unreality of “realistic” art is due to its framing as an art proposition in synthetic terms: one is always tempted to “verify” the proposition empirically.

 ACS :: Art Therapy

The 1969 Vienna Convention defines a treaty as "an international agreement concluded between States in written form and governed by international law, whether embodied in a single instrument or in two or more related instruments and whatever its particular designation".

A reservation is a declaration made by a state by which it purports to exclude or alter the legal effect of certain provisions of the treaty in their application to that state.

 TELEPRESENCE ART
Certainly art or objects of painting and sculpture cannot be expected to compete experientially with this.
I see telepresence art as a means for questioning the unidirectional communication structures that mark both high art (painting, sculpture) and mass media (television, radio).
To me, telepresence art creates a unique context in which participants are invited to experience invented remote worlds from perspectives and scales different than human, as perceived through the sensorial apparatus of telerobots.

 Guggenheim Collection - Artist - Kosuth - ‘Titled (Art as Idea as Idea) [Water],’
In his 1969 essay “Art After Philosophy”, artist and theoretician Joseph Kosuth argued that traditional art-historical discourse had reached its end.
In its place he proposed a radical investigation of the means through which art acquires its cultural significance and its status as art.
This shift was signaled in Kosuth’s First Investigations (subtitled Art As Idea As Idea), a series that includes photostats of dictionary definitions of words such as “water,” “meaning,” and “idea.” Accompanying these photographic images are certificates of documentation and ownership (not for display) indicating that the works can be made and remade for exhibition purposes.

The entire lived and active world of contemporary art is our domain, including the legacy of the past as is it interpreted by contemporary artists and the inclusion of new and hybrid media in the current art scene.
Prior knowledge of modern and contemporary art is helpful, but not required (background in CCTP 738 is useful to this seminar).
For the study of art works, students must give specific emphasis to the social contexts through which the work becomes "art" and to the medium/media used and its associations in art history and the current art world.
