Ever since punk, it's become a ritual for new self-proclaimed "movements" in rock and roll to announce that their real artistic godparents were the Velvet Underground, not any of those pansy 60s over-achievers like the Beatles.
In fact, the Underground had recorded a pile of unreleased material up to that point, which naturally was released in the 80s on not one, but two excellent compilations that I've sandwiched into the discography.

What Goes On - VUAS - VU Biography
The band played shows in England, Wales, and the Netherlands, some of which are collected on the 2001 box set Final V.U. In 1970 Atlantic released Live at Max's Kansas City, a live, fan-recorded bootleg of one of the Velvet Underground's final live performances.
The Velvet Underground was recorded in late 1968, and released in March of 1969.
Squeeze was a respectable, if not especially noteworthy effort, but was certainly not up to the standard established on the previous Velvet Underground albums and is generally not considered a "true" Velvet Underground recording due to the lack of involvement of the original band members.

 The Velvet Underground Bootleg Series
The Bootleg Series Volume 1: The Quine Tapes is an official three-disc set of previously unreleased Velvet Underground live material taped in 1969 by Robert Quine in St. Louis and San Francisco.
Robert Quine was not only a fan of one of rock's most influential and legendary bands when he recorded the group in 1969 but the guitarist later became a founder of punk pioneers Richard Hell and the Voidoids and from 1981-1985 recorded and toured with Velvet Underground leader Lou Reed.
This set is the first installment in a series of live recording by The Velvet Underground.

The album includes a mixture of original material by the band and covers of classic pop, rock and country songs, including the band's most famous single, a cover of The Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane" (an almost note-for-note copy of the version on Velvet Underground's 1969 Live album).
The album was recorded at Toronto, Ontario's Church of the Holy Trinity on November 27, 1987.
The album was released in early 1988 on Latent Records in Canada, and rereleased worldwide later in the year on RCA Records.

Released in March of 1969 and simply titled "The Velvet Underground", this third album finds the Velvets all harmony vocals and electric 12 string guitars, seemingly at rest after the wars of the last three years.
The surprising thing is that, at the time of this recording - two full years before the release of the debut album and it's versions of these songs - the Velvet Underground sound was there from the get go (excluding "Prominent Men", hey, Zimmerman cut deep, ok?).
One album (never mind the repackagings and live crap available on Amazon.) Bollocks was/is the only Sex Pistols record, perhaps the only punk rock record that was really neccessary.

Containing not only all of the Velvets' official albums, but also the much bootlegged "lost VU record" material and many rare and previously unreleased demos and live recordings, PSAS gets the whole "box set" thing right.

A far cry from the fervor of the seminal LIVE 1969, this live recording, though it was made only a year later, is the swan song of the Velvet Underground.
Velvets fan/friend Brigid Polk brought her home cassette machine to this gig at one of the band's favorite NY haunts to record it for herself.
By this time, it was undisputedly Reed's show, so just think of this as the first great live Lou Reed album.

The Quine Tapes showcases the Velvet Underground's beautiful noise and improvisatory music in a way that that the previous best official live record, "1969 Live," only hints at.

Here we have three versions of Sister Ray of varying lengths and styles, as the VU improvises upon the central riff of the "White Light/White Heat" recording.

The latter suffer from too much bass and from tepid songs sung by Mo Tucker.

Maureen Tucker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maureen Ann "Moe" Tucker (born August 26, 1944, in New Jersey, United States) is best known for having been the drummer for the rock group The Velvet Underground.
In the early days, Tucker would also occasionally play the bass guitar during live gigs; the only released song that features her playing bass is a recording of "Melody Laughter" included on the 1995 box set Peel Slowly and See.
Although Tucker did not appear on the original release of the band's 1970 album Loaded, a 1997 2CD re-issue by Rhino Records subtitled Fully Loaded Edition includes two late 1969/early 1970 demos, "I Found a Reason" and another take on "I'm Sticking with You", which feature her on drums and vocals, respectively.
