The first NHL Amateur Draft was held on June 5, 1963 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, Quebec.
Any amateur player that was 17 years of age and older and was not already sponsored by an NHL club was eligible to be drafted.
In 1985 the first draft outside of Montreal was held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto, Ontario in 1985.

The NHL conducted its first Amateur Draft (it became known as the Entry Draft in 1979) in 1963 when the league consisted of just six teams.
The concept of the draft was conceived by then commissioner Clarence Campbell in order to do away with the long-standing practice of NHL clubs sponsoring junior teams, a system that led to an unfair and unequal distribution of amateur talent throughout the league.
Since 1970 was an expansion year, the Buffalo Sabres won a coin flip and earned the right to make the first choice ahead of the Vancouver Canucks, their expansion brethren.

Since Cloutier's NHL rights had been claimed by Chicago in 1976, the Nordiques were forced to give up a First Round draft pick to Chicago in order to retain their star winger.
On June 8, 1983, Cloutier was traded along with Quebec's First Round pick in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft (Adam Creighton) to the Buffalo Sabres for Andre Savard, Tony McKegney and J.F. Sauve and a 3rd Round pick in the 1983 Draft (Iiro Jarvi).
