Chapter 9: Radio and Television, 1905-1970   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
By 1961, television had been extended to 33 country areas, and although the government supported the growth and influence of the commercial stations, it was a firm policy that regional stations were to be owned by regional interests, generally the local press.
This quota was increased to 45% in 1964 and 50% in 1965.
Around 1970, the television industry was undergoing rapid change, and the prospect of colour broadcasting was the least of the changes.

 Jacquelyn S. Bradway
Research performed since the 1970's on children's television commercials and gender stereotypes has consistently shown females circumscribed by limited roles and opportunities, while males are portrayed as having a diverse spectrum of roles and activities in which they partake.
Although the numbers of females shown in diverse roles and activities has increased in the children's TV commercials over the past twenty years, it is still not accurate or indicative of the number of females, or roles, actually held by females in society.
Stereotypes are evident in the disproportionate number of males to females portrayed, the limited behavioral roles that females hold compared to males, the smaller number of occupations and activities in which the females are found, and the gender specificity of traits displayed by individuals in each sex (Unger, 1979).

I may be deviating from the subject of television, and into the world of fashion, but the fact remains that these things were very popular in 1971.

Introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
ith the spread of the women's movement in the 1970's, the television industry spawned a new type of character: a "supposedly" feminist, single, working woman.
Although these new characters seemed to have been an answer to the dreams of the women involved in the Women's Movement, who pressed for such things as an end to sexism and an acceptance of the working women, apparently these images were not nessecarily a positive response to their endless efforts.
To begin my exploration of 1970's television, I would like to first examine the state of society in the 1970's, including what seems to have been the start of this new trend in television: The Women's Movement.
