John McIntosh was a success in the VFL, polling well in the Brownlow in both 1970 and 1971, but a knee injury sustained in the 1971 2nd semi final meant that he missed the grand final against Hawthorn, a match he may have been able to help St Kilda win.
He won the club's best first year player award in 1949, and was named most consistent player in his second to last season.
Football, to McHale, was basically a simple game, which hinged on the physical contests between individuals; the team whose players won the majority of these individual contest would emerge victorious from the match - it was as simple as that.

Barassi had retired as a player in 1969, but after leaving Carlton at the end of the 1971 season he played 3 VFA games with Port Melbourne.
Besides playing in six Demons premiership sides, Ron Barassi won the club's best and fairest award on three occasions, represented the VFL 19 times, and was named in three All Australian teams.
Barassi though was determined to utilise his keen football brain in a coaching role, and realised that the opportunity to do this at Melbourne, where Norm Smith was presumed to have a job for life, would not arise for many years.

He was recruited by North Melbourne from Albury, and made his VFL debut in 1971, but after 5 inconsistent years he was transferred to Geelong.
In the event, North Adelaide 's Barrie Robran won the Magarey Medal, with Backman 11 votes adrift in 6th place, but in the opinion of the majority of observers it was Backman who had undeniably been the season's outstanding performer.
After leaving North, Barassi had stints as coach at Melbourne and Sydney which, whilst unsuccessful in tangible terms, can in retrospect be seen as vital in the reconstruction of those clubs as viable members of the League.

Matthews' failure to secure Victorian football's highest individual honour, the Brownlow Medal, is perhaps not too surprising given his relentlessly vigorous style of play, but participation in the Hawthorn premiership sides of 1971, 1976, 1978 and 1983 will no doubt have afforded more than adequate compensation (if such were needed).
Following his retirement as a player, Matthews embarked on a highly successful coaching career which, up to the end of the 2003 season, had spawned AFL premierships with Collingwood in 1990, and Brisbane in 2001-2-3.
His 191 game, 71 goal VFL career came to an end with the famous 'Bloodbath grand final' of 1945 (reviewed here), during which he was one of ten players reported.
