The study shows that, in 1871, being native-born, urban resident, and literate increased the propensity to marry out, but the reverse appeared to be the case in 1971 for nativity and urban residence, although the correlation was still positive for level of literacy (133-4).
If this was true in 1971, the increasing religious and racial diversity of Canada, in the last two decades, is likely to have reinforced endogamous tendencies rather than encouraging assimilation, however that concept is defined.

The model is estimated with data from 20 Surveys of Consumer Finances in Canada over 1971-1996.
Our main findings are a reduction in this correlation among younger couples beginning in the 1980s, and an inverted U- shaped effect of the spouses' age difference on the correlation, with the maximum correlation occurring approximately when the spouses' ages are equal.
