Tate | Glossary | Feminist art
May be defined as art by women artists made consciously in the light of developments in feminist art theory since about 1970.
By the 1980s art historians such as Griselda Pollock and Rozsika Parker were going further, to examine the language of art history with its gender-loaded terms such as old master and masterpiece.
In what is sometimes known as First Wave feminist art, women artists revelled in feminine experience, exploring vaginal imagery and menstrual blood, posing naked as goddess figures and defiantly using media such as embroidery that had been considered 'women's work'.

Art from Greece was brought to Rome, copied, and also changed by the Romans.
However, Roman art is not merely a continuation of Greek art.
For an amateur it is difficult to determine between the two art forms because neither the Romans nor the Greeks wrote down the history of their own art.

 Collecting Aboriginal Art
Yet, the quality of Aboriginal art ranges from "airport art" to paintings of dazzlingly sophisticated execution and deep spiritual significance, which can make it hard for new collectors to find their bearings (not to mention the challenging nonwestern aesthetic of the work).
The conditions under which great Aboriginal art is produced are often somewhat fragile and can at times be regrettably short-lived (1971-1972 art work art from Papunya is a good example of this or bark paintings from Milingimi in the early 1960's).
A good rule of thumb when collecting any art not just Aboriginal art is to buy the best painting you feel you can afford and to buy a strong image by an artist with a good reputation — and to buy on the strength of the painting and not just on name alone.

Searching Pre-1971 Prior Art: Tools and Methods
A prior art search entails finding and reviewing all previously granted patents that may have an impact on the novelty of the invention in question.
Other technology, however, existed when this country was founded and relevant patents dating from the early 1800's may exist; these patents have to be found and reviewed even though the patent has expired (a United States patent may be issued for a maximum of seventeen years from granting or twenty years from the application date).
While some, specific searches for pre-1971 prior art can be done on-line, the databases are limited in number and do not extend back far enough to be of use to the "older" technologies.
