Grand Prix motor racing originated in France and the French Grand Prix, open to international competition, is the oldest of the Grand Prix races.
The first French Grand Prix was run on June 26, 1906 under the auspices of the Automobile Club de France in Sarthe with a starting field of thity-two automobiles.

This form earned him a drive with Ferrari for 1959, and he stared his second season with the Italian team by finishing second in the Argentinian Grand Prix, but he was thrown from his car in practice at Monaco and broke an arm, leaving him on the sidelines for the remainder of the season.
It almost went right in the French Grand Prix at Clermont-Ferrand in 1972 though, as the race was his for the taking when he suffered a puncture and fell back to third place.

In spite of Chris Amon never giving up, Matra was not able to win a Grand Prix with a complete car of their own and that had nothing to do with the fact, that the New Zealander was the synonym for bad luck.

Josef Koudelka made his photograph Spain, 1972 (Village Idiot) at the beginning of his career with the Magnum photo agency and only a couple of years into his exile from his native Czechoslovakia.
