The 1972 United States Grand Prix was a Formula One race held on October 8, 1972 at the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Race Course in Watkins Glen, New York.
It was the twenty-second victory of the Scot's career, and his fourth in 1972.
Rob Walker said that his team's tires had been manufactured for the Austrian Grand Prix, one of the hottest races of the year, and he was not surprised that they would not work in the 40-degree temperatures at The Glen!

In 1961, after disappointing responses to one-off races in Florida and California, Cameron Argetsinger began a tradition of October meetings among the fall colors of upstate New York.
Revered by fans, teams and media, the race received the Grand Prix Drivers' Association award for the best organized and best staged GP of the season in 1965, 1970 and 1972.
In 1980, financial troubles and the inability of the circuit to handle the increasingly faster and stiffer cars brought an end to The Glen's reign.

Watkins Glen was the third US circuit to host a round of the World Championship series and when the circus arrived here in 1961 it was soon apparent that the sport had finally found a spiritual home.
Giles Villeneuve made it two in a row for the Scuderia in 1979, while Alan Jones scored a fine win for Williams in the final race to be staged on the circuit.
The Glen was a truly magnificent venue for Grand Prix racing but with the turbo era dawning it was obvious to all that the circuit was simply not safe enough.
