On Oct. 12, 1972, at Detroit’s Tiger Stadium, the Oakland Athletics celebrated the franchise’s first American League pennant in 41 years and their first ever under owner Charlie Finley, the colorful, verbose and mercurial Chicago insurance tycoon who had bought the Kansas City Athletics in 1960 for $4 million.
The 1972 World Series would turn out to be a classic, one in which six of the seven games were decided by one run.
This was the one World Series meeting between two teams that dominated the 1970’s and the Athletics had emerged on top because of a backup catcher.
