  New Zealand Architecture
Another reason for early differences between the architecture of New Zealand and those of other countries was the abundance of wood available as a building material.
There has been a tendency in the past to regard the vernacular cottages and farm buildings of pioneering days as the "true" New Zealand architecture and the Gothic churches, Italianate commercial buildings and Edwardian Baroque public buildings in the country's towns and cities as merely pale copies of finer overseas examples.
But there are many buildings of great architectural distinction and interest and buildings, which tell the story of a society developing and changing, taking its cues from Europe and America, but becoming something different in the particular social and physical conditions that have prevailed in the South Pacific.

As an art, architecture is essentially abstract and nonrepresentational and involves the manipulation of the relationships of spaces, volumes, planes, masses, and voids.
there were three great developments in architectural construction—the post-and-lintel, or trabeated, system; the arch system, either the cohesive type, employing plastic materials hardening into a homogeneous mass, or the thrust type, in which the loads are received and counterbalanced at definite points; and the modern steel-skeleton system.
The birth of Renaissance architecture (15th cent.) inaugurated a period of several hundred years in Western architecture during which the multiple and complex buildings of the modern world began to emerge, while at the same time no new and compelling structural conceptions appeared.

 Chihuly Glass in Architecture 1972-1980
From 1972 through 1978, Chihuly and Carpenter directed their collaborative efforts toward making glass doors and windows that were amalgams of sculpture and craft defying categorization.
They mixed blown, cast, assembled, and mosaic glass for these pieces and used writing and linear drawings to animate some of their surfaces, but their most interesting designs for doors and windows were non-pictorial and composed of geometric shapes.
Their collaboration was the most sustained and formal of Chihuly's career, though both artists have continued to work with architecture, and Chihuly has completed numerous large-scale commissions since the early 1980s.
