In October 1970, the 101st Airborne Division was presented the Outstanding Aviation Unit of the Year Award for 1969-1970 at the Army Aviation Association of America Convention in Washington, D.C. In 1972, the 101st Aviation Group returned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky with the other units of the 101st.
The Aviation Group and the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division proved to the world that Army Aviation and the Air Assault concept were indeed up to the challenges faced on the modern battlefield.
The Aviation Brigade deployed its units throughout the United Sates, from the deserts of the National Training Center to the flood ravaged valleys of the Appalachians.

Commercial aviation (a category called "Large Air Carriers") account for 143 accidents which is under one percent of the total and 300 fatalities (0.3% of all known U.S. fatalities).
In investigating aviation safety its definition must be broad enough to encompass every possible causal event, otherwise investigators are liable to overlook subtle and low probability of occurrence events that can have disastrous consequences.
Cases were selected because they appeared to impact aviation safety in at least one of three primary safety areas: A. Near-miss and nearby pacing incidents with UAP reported by U.S. (and some foreign) aircraft while flying over the United States of America and its continental waters.

On October 13, 1972 an Uruguayan Air Force twin turboprop Fairchild FH-227D was flying over the Andes carrying the Stella Maris (Christian Brothers) school's "Old Christians" rugby team from Montevideo, Uruguay to play a match in Santiago, Chile.
On the December 13, 1972, 62 days after the crash, three of the fittest men (given the generally poor physical conditions of the group),, and, decided that the only option was to try to climb out of the mountains to find help.
They reckoned that Chile must lie to the west, based on where the sun set and the direction they were headed at the time of the crash.

 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment
On 7 December 1950, the 4th Light Aviation Section was constituted in the Regular Army and was assigned to the Eighth US Army in Korea where it remained until deactivated on 5 November 1954.
The 4th Light Aviation Section was reactivated on 1 July 1956 as the 101st Aviation Company and assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
The remainder of the 101st Aviation Battalion deployed to Vietnam in December 1967 and served with distinction there until the 101st Airborne Division redeployed to Fort Campbell in February 1972.
