The league had also expanded into the United States, with the Boston Bruins in 1924-25 NHL season, the New York Americans and the Pittsburgh Pirates (NHL) in 1925-26 NHL season and the New York Rangers, Detroit Cougars (later to become the Red Wings), and Chicago Blackhawks in 1926-27 NHL season.

World Hockey Association - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although the league had many players under contract by June of 1972, including a few NHL stars such as Bernie Parent, many of its players were career minor leaguers and college players.
By 1976, it had become evident that many of the WHA's franchises were teetering on the verge of financial collapse, with stable teams few and far between, and that the at one time combined 30 teams of the NHL and WHA had badly strained the talent pool.
Facing financial difficulty and unable to meet payrolls, the WHA and the NHL finally came to an agreement on March 22, 1979, whereby the Edmonton Oilers, New England Whalers (renamed the Hartford Whalers), Quebec Nordiques, and Winnipeg Jets would join the NHL as expansion teams, and the WHA would cease operations.

 Hartford Whalers (1972-1997)
Following the season the WHA would fold, but the Whalers, along with the Oilers, Quebec Nordiques, and Winnipeg Jets would be invited to join the NHL.
In their 2nd NHL season the Whalers would struggle all season finishing in 4th place with a 24-41-18 record missing the playoffs by 11 points.
While other WHA teams spent their money on NHL stars the Whalers decided to go after solid steadier players, and it paid off as they would go on to finish with a league best 46-30-2 record.

 Quebec Nordiques (1972-1995)
With the future of the WHA in doubt Nordiques owner Marcel Aubut began lobbying the NHL to admit his franchise and absorb all the WHA franchise as part of a merger.
As with other WHA teams that joined the NHL, the Nordiques were allowed to only retain 3 players, (with the rest being place in a dispersal draft) thus becoming an expansion team again, and marking the NHL's return to Quebec City 60 years after the Bulldogs left for Hamilton.
In the final WHA season the Nords would finish in 2nd place with a 41-34-5 record as Real Cloutier won the league's final scoring title.

The NHL was in a life-and-death struggle for gate receipts, while the WHA was not going to go away anytime soon.
Initially, the NHL ignored rumblings about an emerging World Hockey Association, until its coffers were raided literally overnight and its stars defected in droves, as the WHA abolished the reserve clause.
