1972-73 WHA season - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1972-73 WHA season was the first regular season of the new defunct World Hockey Association (WHA).
The WHA was split into two divisions, the Eastern Division and the Western Division.
The New England Whalers led the Eastern Division and had the best record in the league.

World Hockey Association - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
By 1976, it had become evident that many of the WHA's franchises were teetering on the verge of financial collapse, with stable teams few and far between, and that the at one time combined 30 teams of the NHL and WHA had badly strained the talent pool.
Many great stars began their careers in the WHA, including Wayne Gretzky, Mike Gartner, Mark Howe, Mike Liut, and Mark Messier, who was the last player skating in the WHA to remain active in professional hockey, until his retirement in the fall of 2005.
Facing financial difficulty and unable to meet payrolls, the WHA and the NHL finally came to an agreement on March 22, 1979, whereby the Edmonton Oilers, New England Whalers (renamed the Hartford Whalers), Quebec Nordiques, and Winnipeg Jets would join the NHL as expansion teams, and the WHA would cease operations.

 Edmonton Oilers
The team was not one of the league's more successful on the ice, accumulating a mediocre record until the final WHA season of 1978-79, where, led by future superstar Wayne Gretzky, the Oilers gained a 48-30-2 mark to lead the league in the regular season, but fell to the Winnipeg Jets in the finals.
Season was shortened due to the 1994-95 NHL lockout.
The 1989 season was a troubled one because of this trade, and for the first time since 1982, the Oilers were out of the playoffs in the first round, losing a seven-game series to the Kings.

 Quebec Nordiques (1972-1995)
In the final WHA season the Nords would finish in 2nd place with a 41-34-5 record as Real Cloutier won the league's final scoring title.
With the future of the WHA in doubt Nordiques owner Marcel Aubut began lobbying the NHL to admit his franchise and absorb all the WHA franchise as part of a merger.
As with other WHA teams that joined the NHL, the Nordiques were allowed to only retain 3 players, (with the rest being place in a dispersal draft) thus becoming an expansion team again, and marking the NHL's return to Quebec City 60 years after the Bulldogs left for Hamilton.

 Hartford Whalers
The Whalers would have the WHA's best regular-season record in the 1972-73 WHA season, with Webster leading the team in scoring and rampaging through the playoffs, and behind legendary ex-Boston University coach Jack Kelley, would win the inaugural league championship.
The next season was not so fine, but while age finally caught up with Gordie Howe, the slack was picked up by Andre Lacroix, the WHA's all time leading scorer, acquired from the folded Aeros.
As it was one of the most stable of the WHA teams, it was one of the four franchises admitted to the National Hockey League when the rival leagues merged in 1979, and the Howes, Rogers, Ley, Keon, Smith, Roberts and Lacroix would go on to wear the uniform of the Hartford Whalers.

The NHL was in a life-and-death struggle for gate receipts, while the WHA was not going to go away anytime soon.
Initially, the NHL ignored rumblings about an emerging World Hockey Association, until its coffers were raided literally overnight and its stars defected in droves, as the WHA abolished the reserve clause.
