The first NHL Amateur Draft was held on June 5, 1963 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, Quebec.
Any amateur player that was 17 years of age and older and was not already sponsored by an NHL club was eligible to be drafted.
A thing about the NHL draft is that it is often unpredictable in terms of where a player is going to go in his future.

In 1974, the NHL allowed clubs to choose one underage (18-year-old) player with the underage selections confined to the first two rounds of the draft.
Schmidt and his amateur scouts made many trips to Canada to see those and other players and were also aided by the NHL's newly formed Central Scouting Bureau, which provided its own list of the top-rated junior hockey talents to be used as a measuring stick by the 18 NHL clubs.
