Elected by FIFA in June 1966, the tournament marked the first time that the current trophy, the FIFA World Cup created by the Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga, was awarded.
Gerd Müller's goal was his 14th in World Cups, which beat Just Fontaine's record of 13.

The 2002 FIFA World Cup (hosted jointly by Japan and Korea) was the first one held in Asia, and in 2010, South Africa will become the first African nation to host the World Cup.
