Two weeks after the South African Grand Prix Tom Pryce won the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch, showing the pace of the new Shadow DN5 but a month later Niki Lauda was the winner of the International Trophy at Silverstone in the new Ferrari 312T.
There was controversy from the start of the meeting because the Grand Prix Drivers Association was unhappy with the state of the barriers, which were not properly bolted together, and they went on strike.
As the race was stopped early half points were awarded, Jochen Mass thus becoming the first winner of "half" a Grand Prix.

McLaren have tasted much success at the Spanish race, scoring a total of seven grands prix wins, the first in 1975 for German Jochen Mass, and then most recently a hat trick of victories for former Team McLaren Mercedes driver, Mika Hakkinen between 1998 and 2000.
The first Spanish Grand Prix took place in 1951 at the Pedrables circuit in Barcelona and was held there until 1954 when the race disappeared from the calendar for 14 years.
Jarama which is north of Madrid hosted the 1968 race, and the venue alternated between Jerez and Montjuich Park which overlooked Barcelona until 1975 when a serious accident at Montjuich made Jarama the permanent venue.

As so many other Grand Prix drivers before, here only should be mentioned the names of Jack Brabham, Bruce McLaren, John Surtees, Emerson Fittipaldi and Alain Prost as typical examples not to forget all others, Graham Hill decided to establish a Formula One team of his own and to become a constructor.
But in contrast to the works team, who scored 9 worldchampionship points in their maiden Grand Prix season getting two fine 3rd places finishes throughout the year, the Embassy team with Graham Hill as the their sole driver was not able to do so.
At the 1975 Barcelona Grand Prix weekend nearly endless discussions between the drivers, the constructors and the official both of F.I.A. and the Spanish Royal Automobil Club had spun around the circuit´s safety.

The Circuit de Catalunya was constructed between 1989 and 1991, with the first grand prix held there on September 29, 1991 — just 19 days after the official opening.
Between 1968 and 1975 it alternated between Montjuich Park (Barcelona) and Jarama (Madrid), the previous Spanish Grands Prix having taken place at Pedralbes, a Barcelona street circuit in 1951 and 1954.
The team’s first victory was courtesy of Jochen Mass in 1975, followed immediately by James Hunt in 1976 on his way to winning the Drivers’ Championship.

The Spanish Grand Prix has produced amongst the largest and shortest winning margins in a World Championship Formula One race - Jackie Stewart (Matra-Ford) finishing over two laps clear of Bruce McLaren (McLaren-Ford) at Montjuich Park in 1969, and Ayrton Senna (Lotus-Renault) beating Nigel Mansell (Williams-Honda) by just 0.014sec at Jerez in 1986.
The closest five-car finish in a Spanish Grand Prix - and a spectacular sight - occurred at Jarama in 1981, when Gilles Villeneuve (Ferrari) led home Jacques Laffite (Ligier-Matra at 0.22 sec), John Watson (McLaren-Ford at 0.58sec), Carlos Reutemann (Williams-Ford at 1.01sec) and Elio de Angelis (Lotus-Ford at 1.24sec).
Pole position milestones recorded at the Spanish Grand Prix have included the 50th by Lotus (at Montjuich in 1973), the 50th by Ferrari (at Jarama in 1974), the 100th by Lotus (at Jerez in 1986), and both the 40th and 50th by Ayrton Senna (at Jerez in 1989 and '90).

As a result of the Le Mans accident, the Grands Prix of France, Switzerland and Germany are cancelled, along with many other races; Switzerland bans circuit racing as a result.
The Grand Prix formula, now extended to the end of 1960, now stipulates the use of AvGas in the place of alcohol fuels and reduces the length of Championship events from 500 km or three hours to 300 km or two hours.
Following the Italian Grand Prix, a new safety measure is introduced to F1: medical cars follow Formula One cars on the formation lap of every Grand Prix, in order to improve reaction time in case of a first lap accident.

The Nurburgring is often thought to have been the longest Grand Prix circuit in history and its early configuration did make it the longest circuit until 1957 when Pescara ran a single World Championship race.

In 1921 there were two different circuits used in the region: the Real Moto Club de Catalunya organized the Armangue Trophy for cyclecars on At the same time the Penya Rhin Grand Prix was organized on a nine-mile circuit formed by the roads around Vilafranca in the hills behind Sitges.
The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 ended the racing and it was not until 1946 that another race Three years later Pedralbes hosted another Grand Prix race but the Le Mans disaster of 1955 meant stricter safety rules and Pedralbes faded into history.
It was not until 1966 that the Catalans revived the old Montjuich Park circuit, as a response to the construction of the Jarama circuit near Madrid.

James was disqualified and later reinstated as the winner of the Spanish Grand Prix for supposedly driving a McLaren that was 1.8cm too wide.
A seventh win at the British Grand Prix was disallowed after a row over an accident at the first corner that Hunt had got involved in.
At the Italian Grand Prix, the Texaco fuel that McLaren used was tested and although legal, the Italian scruitineers deemed the fuel to be illegal and Hunt was forced to start at the back of the grid.
