After a bad year with Lotus in 1975, in which the Lotus 76 proved a failure and he reverted to driving the 72F, Peterson drove the first two races of 1976 in the Lotus 77 before rejoining March Engineering, with whom he won yet again in Italy, driving their 761.

The Swedish Grand Prix was a round of the Formula One World Championship from 1973 to 1978.
In the first Swedish Grand Prix, local hero Ronnie Peterson came close to winning the race for Lotus, but suffered a puncture on the last lap to allow New Zealander Denny Hulme through to win.
That was as close as any Swede came to winning on home soil, and the deaths in 1978 of both Peterson and Gunnar Nillson contributed to the demise of this round of the world championship.
