The Literature of Spain: 1975 to the Present—in Spanish
In this program, respected authorities look at the past 25 years of literature in post-Franco Spain and the literary inclinations of the next up-and-coming generation of poets, authors, and playwrights.
A passionate dissatisfaction with Spain's immediate past and a keen awareness of the need for a rebirth of spirit and letters was a mindset held in common by a disparate group of writers later renowned as the Generation of '98.

Poet, critic, literary historian, anthologist, founder and director of East-West Nexus/PROTA, the Project for the dissemination of Arabic literature and Arab/Islamic culture and history; a major Palestinian and Arab literary and cultural figure: This space is dedicated to Salma Khadra Jayyusi.
It was in 1980, as Visiting Professor at the University of Texas, which she came to the final realization that the paucity of Arabic literary and cultural material in world languages, which largely lies behind the misrepresentation of Arab/Islamic culture in the West, must be faced with determination.
She feels that a study of the roots of the large corpus of Arabic literature, one of the richest in the world, will lead not only to a greater understanding of Arabic culture on the whole, but also to a deeper understanding of how literature, both prose and poetry, develop as a universal creative activity.

  Why We Teach Literature
One of the two camps was labeled the academic tradition, in which the treatment of literature in the curriculum was shaped by the science of philology, and the reading of every literary work had to be justified on the grounds of its contribution to the students' understanding of the logic and stylistics of literature.
Literature will contribute to their ability to understand others and to transcend differences if students read about people with problems like their own: people making life choices in circumstances of uncertainty, people searching for ideals in an increasingly materialistic world, people seeking to relate to others across cultural boundaries.
Secondly, it was suggested that a major value of literature is to give readers constructs--words, metaphors, images, and plots--with which to understand what would otherwise seem to be the random phenomena of human experience; and that a complementary value was the power of literature to nourish and educate the imagination.

 1993 Project: Marxist Criticism
Literature, as a cultural production, is a form of ideology, one that legitimizes the power of the ruling class.
In the eighteenth century, for example, literature was used by the English upper classes both to express and transmit the dominant value systems to the lower classes.
Literature may be situated within ideology, but it can also distance itself from ideology--thereby allowing the reader to gain an awareness of the ideology on which it is based.

50 Years of Chemical Information in the American Chemical Society: 1943-1993
As the literature searching utilized more and more mechanized aids and as profiles to retrieve the relevant information had to become relatively precise, the need for fairly comprehensive standardization and vocabulary control was examined.
A decline in the number of chemical literature courses was ascribed to a faculty preference for integration of chemical literature in other courses and to a belief that literature was less important than other courses.
Included were a collection of papers presented at the symposium on “Chemical Literature Searching Techniques” at the 117th ACS National Meeting in Detroit in April 1950, and revised papers from the symposium on the “Preparation of Literature and Patent Surveys” at the 11lth ACS National Meeting in Atlantic City in April 1947.

Knight’s purpose was to “query whether there may not be in a proportion of fatal cases, clear evidence of an intention to self-destruction.”[104] Arguing this point, Knight described death scenes suggestive of accidental deaths along with scenes that were indicative of suicide.

Apart from during the Franco years (1939-1975) Spanish literature was written in these four languages, although the most representative has always been Castilian.
Today there is a certain ambiguity: Some critics identify Spanish literature with Castilian literature, and use the nomenclature Hispanic literature for the remaining peninsular languages.
To conclude, it is important to stress that Hispanic literature is simply a branch of Roman literature, that is to say, of Latin derivative languages.
