The first Formula 1's Japanese Grand Prix, in 1976, was held at the Fuji Speedway, 40 miles west of Yokohama.
At the most recent Japanese Grand Prix, on October 12, 2003, Michael Schumacher endured one of the most trying races in his illustious career but managed to secure the point he needed to take his sixth World Championship, beating the record held by Juan Manuel Fangio.
The qualifying session for the 2004 Grand Prix, due to have been held on 9 October, was postponed until race day after a typhoon hit Suzuka.

In 1976 he went to McLaren, and despite a runaway start to the season by Niki Lauda in his Ferrari and Hunt’s disqualification in the British Grand Prix, which he had won, he crawled his way back into contention for the title.
In this he was helped in no small part by the absence of Lauda following his catastrophic accident in the German Grand Prix, which saw him miss six weeks of action.

It was the first Japanese Grand Prix ever, taking place at the Fuji Speedway, that had been opened in the sixties, on 24th October, 1976.
At that point James Hunt was confronted with the problem of keeping a minimum lead of 4 points ahead of Lauda until the end of the Japanese Grand Prix to become the 1976 world champion.
It was the 10th and last Grand Prix victory of his career.

The 1976 Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji Raceway had seen Britain’s James Hunt snatch the world driver’s championship from Austrian Niki Lauda, when the latter withdrew early in the race due to the pouring rain and left the way open for Hunt to take the title.
A marshal was killed at the end of the straight during the 1977 Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji Raceway and Japan did not have a round of the F1 world championship for 10 years.

The 1976 United States Grand Prix was a Formula One race held on October 10, 1976 at the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Race Course in Watkins Glen, New York.
This event was also referred to as the United States Grand Prix East in order to distinguish it from the United States Grand Prix West held on March 28, 1976 in Long Beach, California.
When the final round in Japan saw atrocious weather conditions for the race, Lauda refused to continue in the downpour, and Hunt's third place, behind race winner Mario Andretti, was enough to claim the Championship by one point.
