Skimping on safety will not put rail back on track - Editorial - Opinion
Rail and road have co-existed uneasily since the first steam trains trumpeted speed and mobility in the 19th century's Industrial Revolution.
These competing forms of transport were destined to clash and the flashpoint of that clash is the level crossing, where the heavy train's long braking distance is pitted against the often capricious moves of road vehicles.
Rail transport for passengers has for at least half a century been pushed aside by the convenience and flexibility of the motor car.
