The Japanese Skating Federation based its Olympic team selection on international results over the past two seasons, but some in the media were suspicious of the process.
One reason why several top Japanese skaters have sought training bases in the West is overcrowding at rinks in Japan, where top athletes often share the ice with recreational skaters and must wait in long lines to have their program music played.
Ando appeared in television commercials for eight companies last year, and the Japanese media is as likely to gossip about her clothing and appearance as it is to discuss her skating.
